Science Olympiad
2/15/2020
Some of our club members participated in Science Olympiad at Ocoee High School. As this was our first year in the club, we wanted to have a little fun and explore our interests outside of medicine. This experience was a great chance to strengthen our team bond, as well.
We learned about a wide variety of different sciences, including ornithology, fossils and geology, astronomy, and chemistry. We placed 3rd out of 32 teams in Designer Genes (biology and genetics) and 8th in Dynamic Planet (environmental science and oceanography).
A big thank you to Mr. King for volunteering!

Guest Speaker
Dr. Isaiah Cochran
2019-2020 National President of American Medical Student Association
12/18/2019
Dr. Cochran was kind enough to come to OHS and give a presentation on his work as the National President of the American Medical Students Association (AMSA) as he takes a gap year between medical school and residency.
Dr. Cochran discusses a plethora of subjects ranging from learning strategies for each of the college core subjects to how applications are considered for medical school. Please see our upcoming page called Guest Speaker Takebacks to learn more about what we learned from his presentation.
Thank you so much for the opportunity and great advice, Dr. Cochran!

Community Service
Homemade Holiday Card Drive
11/17/2019
We created and coordinated a Homemade Holiday Card Drive as our first community service activity. Student, teachers, and administration created holiday cards adorned with messages of festive cheer, and we collected more than 70 cards. The cards were sent to a nearby organization in Orlando called Give Kids the World Village, a resort for chronically ill children to forget about their struggles and just have fun! 11/6/2019
Briana and Alyssa are both undergraduate students at UCF in different stages of the pre-med track. They gave an amazing presentation about their journeys being a pre-med student, the rewards and challenges they experienced, the key things to look out for when choosing and studying for classes, and cheaper alternatives to the traditional college education
Thank you, Briana and Alyssa, for your time and tips!

Guest Speaker
Grace Thompson
Student in University of South Florida's 7-Year B.S./MD Program
10/23/2019
Grace Thompson, an Oviedo High School alumni, is a student at USF's 7-year medical program, where the first three years are spent at the Judy Genshaft Honors College and the last 4 years are spent at the Morsani College of Medicine.
Grace spoke about the general requirements to enter the program, which methods are best to tackle incessant memorization, and activities that stand one apart from other applicants. She really dug deep in the importance of high school research, whether it be conducting your own project, helping a professor with a literature review, getting with a group of friends to learn more about your interests, or taking a class like AP Research. Research is a really big aspect of medical school application, so whether you are involved as a high school student or an undergraduate, it is important to keep an eye out for interesting opportunities.
This guest speaker meeting was really special and inspiring, as it goes to show how far OHS students can go!
